A top civil official of Kashmir on Thursday said that over 20,000 civilians and 7,000 policemen were killed during two decades of violence in restive Kashmir.

A police officer said that the Indian army and police personnel on specific information about the presence of militants in village Daril Vilgam, Handwara in North Kashmir laid siege around it in the morning.

Srinagar, Nov 18: The death toll in the bridge collapse in Kashmir has reached seven with the recovery of three more bodies on Tuesday.

At least eight soldiers including two officers are missing after an Indian army post was hit by a snow avalanche in North Kashmir.

Police sources said that army personnel intercepted a group of militants at Lachipora, near the Line of Control (LoC), some 40 kms from Baramulla in North Kashmir on Monday.

Polling started at 0800 hours and concluded at 1700 hours. The moderate to brisk polling was reported across the 10 constituencies.

About 300 sand bags were placed on the bridge on Sunday morning to check the capacity of the bridge. However, it failed to cope with the weight and collapsed.

'Tens of thousands of police, para-military and army personnel have been deployed in Kashmir to ensure free and fair polls,' an official said.
